What is the role of the Supervisor?

A supervisor acts in a mentoring role, providing emotional support as well as information and guidance. There are many different models of clinical supervision, including traditional, cognitive- behavioral, humanistic-existential, psychodynamic, and integrative.  I tend to bring parts of each of these approaches into our work depending on your needs and those of the clients you are working to help. 

 

I particularly like aspects of the interpersonal process supervision model, which focuses on the relationships between supervisors and supervisees and the relationships between supervisees and their clients. This type of supervision helps increase supervisees’ awareness of their interpersonal style and how it affects their work. It is also important, from a humanistic-existential viewpoint, to ensure time is spent focusing on the supervisee’s personal growth and development as a clinician. By becoming more aware of one's values, beliefs, and biases, the supervisee will increase their self-awareness and thereby, develop their therapeutic skills.
